Live, interactive courses delivered to you in your home
Amidst the madness, Mayfair School of English continues on through online learning! But, understandably, you may have some questions as to what it includes. So, here are some frequently asked questions with some helpful answers.
Can I improve my English online?
Definitely! It’s believed by researchers that the vital ingredient of learning is interactive discussion between students. Our lessons include plenty of opportunity to discuss your thoughts and ideas, as well as practise what you’ve learnt. All of this means that you can learn just as effectively online as you can in a classroom environment. Our classes are designed to be as similar to face-to-face classes as possible. So, yes, it’s definitely possible to improve your English online. All that’s required of you is your attention, enthusiasm and completion of homework. Yes, homework!
We follow a course book, meaning that the classes are structured. They focus on the four skills – reading, listening, speaking and writing – as well as working on vocabulary and grammar. Although we’re not in the same room, technology allows us to put you into virtual groups to practise, and the teacher can join each of these groups at the click of a button, meaning that your teacher can still monitor you language and offer corrections.
Our classes also include a weekly test to track your progress for the week. Don’t be alarmed, these tests are to help you see what you have learned in the week, and what you might need to spend more time on. Mistakes are a student’s best friend. Not only do they help us identify your problem areas, but they can also help to solidify your understanding, making them useful.
Do you offer group classes as well as 1-2-1 classes?
Yes. Right now, we currently have 4 different classes open, from pre-intermediate to upper-intermediate plus, and an IELTS course, too! Once you have completed your online level test, we can tell you at what time your class is available. Click the link at the end to complete our level test.
If you prefer classes more tailored to your individual needs, why not try some 1-2-1 sessions? All you need to do is tell us about your availability and what you would like to achieve in the lessons so we can find you the perfect teacher!
How many weeks should you book?
Again, this is dependent on you. For those who wish to improve more significantly, more weeks are needed. However, if you only have a couple of weeks free time, our lessons can still have a positive impact on your English.
If you’re studying for an exam (Cambridge, IELTS, TOEFL), and are not quite at the level you need, we recommend booking as many weeks as you possibly can, to give you the best opportunity to achieve the level/band you need. Don’t forget we are also offering a fantastic promotion on our online classes, 4 weeks for the price of 3!
Can I start my course online and continue my lessons in the school when the situation gets better?
Like all good things, they come to those who wait. No one knows when this current situation will end, but, if you have booked online lessons, and we are later able to reopen the school, then, of course, you can continue in our face-to-face classes. The more, the merrier.
Are the teachers qualified?
All our teachers are fully qualified, with decades of experience between them and CELTA or DELTA qualifications. Each has taught abroad as well as in the UK, and are continuously developing professionally by attending in-house Teacher Development specifically designed around our students. For example, they learn about new methodologies and skills in order to get the best out of each student, which ultimately leads to progress in your English.
How many students are there in one class?
Our limit is 16 in our face-to-face classes. Understandably this seems like a lot for online learning, but it gives you the chance to interact and practice with students from different parts of the world and with different experiences to your own.
What nationalities are the students in the classes?
We have students from all around the world studying with us, with students at the moment from each continent. (Well, maybe not North America, but let’s face it, they’d benefit, too. Actually, so would most Brits!)
What is my level of English?
For you to get the most out of your classes, it is incredibly important for each and every potential student to complete an online level test. Once you have completed it, you can then be placed into the correct level class. We must insist that you do the test yourself, and not have help from anyone, including Google, or there may be a chance of you being placed into a level that is much higher than your own. When this happens, students are unable to follow the class, which means you won’t be able to learn. We understand students believe the higher the level, the better. However, it’s actually the opposite. When you were learning to drive, you didn’t start by going on the motorway.
What course materials do I need?
As mentioned earlier, our classes follow a course book, and you will receive materials, for the moment, in PDF form, which we would recommend printing if possible. Having said that, there’s nothing stopping you from ordering the book online for you to have a hardcopy.
Will there be homework?
Absolutely! Why wouldn’t there be?! Our teachers spend time thinking of homework that would benefit you and your English. So, make sure you complete it. Sometimes the homework is needed for the next lesson, and if you haven’t done it, you won’t be fully able to participate.
The homework may be: exercises for further practise of the grammar; watching a video clip and making notes in preparation for the next day; or even doing research on the topic you’re studying in class to share with your classmates. Whatever it may be, enjoy continuing your English outside the class!
Can I get a certificate at the end of my course?
Indeed you do! Our certificates show the total number of hours that you have attended a course, and what level that course was. If you would like one, be sure to ask our reception staff, who will be more than happy to arrange that for you.
We hope that covers everything! If you have any other questions about our courses, the school, or our teachers, do not hesitate to email our team at: [email protected]
