July 2009 Events by Duncan Watson

If June was one of the hottest months in London in recent years, then July was certainly one of the wettest. Grey, chilly and very, very rainy, as far as the weather is concerned this has been a miserable month. Still we Londoners are used to the rain, though we don’t usually expect so much of it in the peak of summer! And though the manufacturers of barbecues were less than happy, shops selling umbrellas did a roaring trade! Despite the awful weather, our students made the most of our varied Social Programme this month with two visits to nightclubs - The Cuban, in London’s happening Camden district, and Strawberry Moons, in the exclusive Piccadilly area. There was something of a sporting theme to this month’s programme as students visited Wimbledon Dog Track with Mike to see some good, old-fashioned East-End culture, alive and kicking in South-West London; there was also a chance for students to practise their pool-playing skills as Mayfair’s resident hustler/teacher extraordinaire, Aman, took them to a typical London pool hall to show off his skills at the table. The highlight of the month, however, was the school’s second Boat Party of 2009, which took place on 29th July. Over 160 students participated and, refusing to let the downpour dampen our spirits, a fantastic time was had by all!

Clearly nobody visits London because of the weather, a fact that was proved beyond any doubt this month as our school welcomed many new students from all over the globe throughout July. Our school has never had such high student numbers but, fortunately, thanks to the addition of extra classroom space and new, highly-qualified teaching staff, taking up the opportunity to develop their careers within Mayfair School, we have been able to maintain our average of less than 16 students per class, a statistic of which we are very proud. At the close of July we were visited by a film crew, who came to make a movie about our school for our new website. The production was overseen by the marketing team from Mayfair Multilingual and directed by Vlad Akhtyrskiy, our resident auteur from Russia. The film stars Naeem Ahmad, the founder of Mayfair School, and will showcase many of the great benefits that students of Mayfair School can enjoy. Now in post-production the film should be released onto this website in coming weeks - so watch this space!

That’s all for now, more to come next month!

Duncan
