May 2010 Events by Duncan Watson

The school was pleased to welcome a new member of the teaching staff to our fold this May in the form of Ruth, a recent graduate from Oxford University. Ruth developed her interest in languages as a student of Linguistics and Russian at Oxford prior to training to teach English as a foreign language. Mayfair School is proud to count this newly-qualified teacher as one of its teaching staff and we all expect bright things of her in the future. Speaking of professional development, we would ask all Mayfair School students to keep their fingers crossed for Tara, one of our teachers, who is currently training for the Cambridge Diploma in English Language Teaching to Adults (DELTA). Having joined Mayfair School in June 2009, Tara has been able to finely hone her teaching skills to the point that she felt ready to enrol on the Cambridge DELTA in January 2010, with financial help from our school. As she approaches her final exam at the beginning of June it must be a nervous time for Tara, but we that she is buoyed up by the knowledge that all her students wish her every success in her exams.

The school has been basking in the gorgeous early summer sunlight this May and, with this in mind, there was an outdoor theme to our Social Programme this month with trips to the gloriously picturesque Greenwich Market at the kick-off of this month’s programme on 1 May (where to better to soak up the fantastic views of that London has to offer than from in front of the Royal Observatory, which marks the spot of the International Meridian?). We followed this up with our perennial visit to that old Mayfair favourite, The Tattershall Castle, on 21 May; if you know of a better view of London’s riverside than this popular nightspot, then just email me directly so that we all can make a ‘beeline’ for your recommended venue! Refreshing views and refreshing beverages are all well and good, but sometimes the soul yearns for something deeper, doesn’t it? That’s we scheduled a trip to the National Gallery into our programme of events this month, accompanied by our teacher, Jamie, regular patron of the arts, what more could a budding London culture-vulture wish for?...

We must all count ourselves lucky to be living in this most opulently satisfying city of cities – London; particularly when the Sun is out….but if this month’s programme has not been sufficient to rekindle your love of London, fear not for there will be much to come as the summer waxes golden…

That’s all for now, but watch this space for upcoming events…

Duncan
