January 2011 Events

After a much appreciated Christmas break, the school opened its doors to students again on 4th January and formally welcomed in 2011. In fact, this month was all about celebrating the ‘new’ at our school. To begin with we added a new programme to our Mayfair College curriculum on 10 January 2011, in the form of the ABE (Association of Business Executives) Diploma Part 2 in Business Management and Travel, Tourism and Hospitality Management. This course provides progression routes to the second year of a UK degree course at some excellent universities around the country; for more information visit ABE’s site here.

However, the innovation did not stop there as January saw us undertake a complete programme of refurbishments at our Central London site. The programme will see all classrooms redecorated, new carpets laid and the addition of the latest educational furniture in all our teaching spaces. We have also added a new computer self-study room where students can work on their assignments in a peaceful atmosphere. Due to the scale of this project, it has not been possible to finish all of these works in January but we hope to have them done by the end of February. Once these jobs are out of the way we will also be adding new classroom technology to several of our classrooms in the form of Promethean Smartboards. These state-of-the-art interactive whiteboards are a powerful teaching tool allowing teachers to being lessons to life with direct access to the vast power of the internet as well as hundreds of valuable educational programmes, making every second of lesson time a rewarding and productive experience.

Although it did kick off with the return of an old favourite event, Mike’s New Year’s Resolution-breaking Pub Crawl on Friday 7th January, our Social Programme this month was otherwise similarly innovative. We had Ruth’s Irish Dancing Extravaganza on Friday 14th January (don’t ask why – we didn’t!); Raving Rafael’s Dance Night at London’s famous Ministry of Sound on 21st January; and, just to bring a bit of refinement to the proceedings, we finished off with Ben’s scenic walking tour of the cultural points of interest along the banks of London’s River Thames (which may or may not have included a few pubs along the way!).

There will be plenty more fun in next month’s Social Programme, let’s hope the weather is kind to us as well….Just watch this space for your next update!
