February 2010 Events by Duncan Watson

There was a musical theme to this month’s Social Programme. ‘Musical’ in the broadest sense of the word that is! It all started off, on 5th February,  with Pete showing us just what he can do when he applies his vocal chords to the challenge of a Barry Manilow song. This was all in the name of good fun when he took our students to Asa, one of London’s most popular Korean karaoke bars. Though what any of that has to do with Barry Manilow we are as yet unsure – still our students all had a great time and that’s what counts. The month finished on the same musical note, on 26th February, when Zoë took students to Bar Salsa, probably the most well-known Latin bar in London, to show off her ‘moves’ on the dance floor. Zoë is married to a Venezuelan and clearly some of that ‘Latin spirit’ has rubbed off on her as she well-nigh stole the show that night. If you don’t believe me just take a look at out school’s Social Programme Photo Site.

February was not all about bopping and grooving though, there was time for some high culture too, Australian high culture that is! Yes, our resident Aussie, Rafael could not let Australian Independence Day go by without inviting students to join him in a huge celebration at Walkabout, London’s unofficial Australian High Commission. Some may point out that Australian Independence day takes place on 26th January not 19th February, but as Rafael was keen to remind any that were listening, a date is just a number! At Mayfair School we are proud of the fact that our staff includes native speaker teachers from outside the UK – currently we have two teachers from Australia, one from New Zealand and one from South Africa.

That’s all for this month – check back here for more news in February.

Duncan
